I understand that. In Windows I don't run the installer for every update. I just rename the old get_iplayer.pl script and copy the new one unless there have been changes to other components. I dare say I can do the same in Linux if there is any urgency. I was just puzzled that previous updates to the PPA had been available within hours while this one was taking longer.

An advantage of updating manually is that I can keep old versions of the script, if I want a feature that is no longer in the current version. For example with v2.99 and rtmpdump I was able to download Alastair's p0081fsp Flash clip (although that doesn't help Alastair if he hasn't kept the v2.99 script and rtmpdump).
