The IDs are perfectly valid. To use them as CSS selectors, you just  
need to escape the dots with backslashes.

E.g.

   id="shopping-cart-actions.actions.continue-shopping" in HTML

becomes

   #shopping-cart-actions\.actions\.continue-shopping {} in CSS
