I don't know the rules either but I have no problem if someone responded
directly to me.
It is my opinion that replying directly reduces the mailing list bulk,
especially if it is just "You're welcome" or "Thanks" since that is really a
personal note and the whole list dont need to see that.
If, on the other hand, the responce includes something like "it worked" or
âit did not workâ then others would benefit from the response.
Many times I see responses that include "it works" or something of that nature
and even though I am not ready for that information I would make a .pdf
document of it and keep it for reference. In that way I could refer to it
rather than posting for assistance on that same topic, and again adding
unnecessary bulk to the list.
