Years ago I made some picts of forms. I had the same problem of pixellation
of the characters when I tried to turn some of the text sideways. To solve
it I left each letter of the text vertical, but put a carriage return after
each letter instead. In other words, the text was not turned sideways at
all, but the shape was still vertical with each letter below the previous
one. I adjusted the vertical "kerning" by changing the line spacing. The
text stayed sharp, not pixellated.
