RB is aware of the extension and whether it's hidden or not. I think it was doing what it was supposed to do. If you asked for filename and only filename.txt (with .txt hidden) existed, then the file you asked for didn't exist as far as RB was concerned. RB also offers DisplayName which will use the name of the file as the user will see it.
