But from the user's perspective, it's not a contextual menu if it's appearing in response to something other than a contextual click (i.e. right-click or control-left-click).

Well, there is few difference with clicking on a bevelbutton with menu. I often start using a bevelbutt, then switch to a canvas plus a contextualmenu, to get full control over the look and keep the menu... In this case, I open a contextualmenu with a plain simple clik, and no user never complained.
