I think what he had in mind was to actually have a column of popup
menu widgets in the listbox. In fact this is possible (on MacOS X,
at least), but the technique is well beyond the scope of this list.

You are correct in what I would ideally like to have. You say that
it's possible on OS X (at this time, all client machines are Macs),
but beyond the scope of the list. Have you any pointers to others on
the web who may cover this technique? While a contextual menu would
do the job, it won't be obvious to the user that the menu is available.
