To be clear, all I am seeing is a definition of what the MacType is,
not a discussion of pros and cons of using MacType vs. extensions.

Perhaps you could be more specific? I have searched rbdocs.com
and find no reference to it.

In addition to the Rb documentation, you may find the
documentation at <http://developer.apple.com> to be useful. It
is unreasonable to expect the Rb documentation to answer all
questions about OS-specific functionality. As it turns out, your
question is answered at <http://www.rbdocs.com/>.

I understand what you all are saying. It would appear that
things are "changing". However, I don't keep up with every
little detail of what Apple is doing on a daily basis with the
OS and I find it frustrating to have to ask these kinds of
questions because, for all of my searching, I have not found a
discussion about what method one should or should not use and
what is heading for obsolescence. I have only discovered that
this didn't work by trial and error, not by anything that the RB
documentation said.
So I guess the consensus here is to NOT use extension filtering
for Mac OS, but MacType.
