I tried that but I drew some of the shapes in-program, they are not
pictures. Some of these shapes are user specified. I would have to make
millions of masks to fit every possible option.
not to smash that idea or anything.
I thought that it was a good idea but I don't think it can work.

When you set up icons, you provide a mask.
Usually the mask is used to define the boundaries of the icon.
But I believe that the mask can also be used to determine transparency.
Try it out with shades of grey in the mask.
