1) Not quite sure why this happens. File types are handled differently
on Macs and pcs.
It does not seem to work for me either. I normally use a Mac but have a
pc notebook.
2) The square character is a nil. Somehow your program is writing a nil
to the end of the file.
Stepping through should reveal how it is happening.
