That would be ironic, because I improved portability to another
BSD-based OS (Ultrix) in the last week, and had hoped that this would
improve the general portability to non-GNU systems.

Showing a transcript of a failing build might already help.  Of
course, it would make things much easier if we had an account on an
OpenBSD box (or whatever OS you care about).
