Well it's just weird, cause there isn't a texinfo.tex anywhere in 
texlive/2008Basic, but I put one at 
/usr/local/texlive/2008basic/texmf-config/tex/generic/config/ and things seem 
to be happy.

BTW, now that I'm working on a G5, how do I build it for 64-bits?
