Per ora mi soffermerei sul caso desktop.
La licenza dice tra le altre cose:
*1) puoi distribuire END APPLICATION che usano la libreria ECW/JPEG2000*
Subject to all other terms of this Agreement, You are hereby granted a
nonexclusive, worldwide, *royalty-free license* to use the ECW/JP2 CODEC
SDK to create, use and distribute END APPLICATIONS that *DECODE *for
COMMERCIAL USES.
*2) Non si può distribuire il codice sorgente, ma solo i binari*_
No Source Code Distribution_. Components of the ECW/JP2 SDK used in END
APPLICATIONS may be distributed only in object code or executable form;

license that provides ERDAS with substantially the same protections as
set forth in Appendix A hereto. *You agree to take all necessary steps
to ensure the enforceability of the end-user license*, including, as
appropriate: (i) offering a refund of at least a portion of the purchase
price of END APPLICATIONS to end-users who disagree with the terms of
the end-user license including the terms set forth in Appendix A; or
(ii) *preventing downloading of END APPLICATIONS or SERVICES without
acceptance of the end-user license*. You also agree to take adequate
steps to prevent unauthorized use of the ECW/JP2 CODEC SDK or its
derivatives by end users who decline the end-user license offer, such as
*by disabling access to Your END APPLICATION or preventing access to
features or SERVICES made possible by the ECW/JP2 CODEC SDK*, including
ENCODING or DECODING in Your END APPLICATION or as part of your SERVICES.

Non mi sembrano cose impossibili.
Al più potrebbero servire due distribuzioni QGIS (una con e una senza
supporto ECW).
Ma penso non sia necessario, perchè per comprimere più di 500MB dovrebbe
servire una chiave Hardware e non capisco perchè uno non dovrebbe
accettare una licenza che nei fatti non permette di essere trasgredita.
A meno che con la versione ricompilata non venga meno il supporto alla
chiave HW. Ma a quel punto basta non permettere il "save as...ECW".

Hum, vero, ma l'utente medio di compilare proprio non
ne vuole sapere. Il l'SDK MrSid lo stiamo distribuendo
insieme a GeoServer (come estensione) perché il suo uso
server non è ristretto (abbiamo chiesto a Lizardtech
direttamente, tanto per andare sul sicuro).
Quindi immagino che a maggior ragione non lo sia per il desktop, giusto?
Ergo, MrSID lo possiamo avere nel prossimo QGIS (a meno di problemi con
le dipendenze, of course)?

Hai riferimenti ai punti rilevanti delle licenze?
Eh no, le licenze non le ho guardate. So che Chris e Simone
hanno scambiato mail con i signori di Lizardtech e hanno
poi concluso che la redistribuzione era fattibile, ma
non so i dettagli.
