This is a very complex thing. It involves cooperation from all driver
components, and most importantly the monitor driver. Unless fbcon in general
adopts the notion of a monitor driver like KGI, I don't see a good way to do
it.
I'd then rather stick to VESA modes.
But of course I can write up some theory about mode calculation.
