Okay, no error any more - fbset seems to be very careful about the timings!
But: The screen is damaged like in mode 800x600!
Because I'm now able to run XGGI, I can analyse the problem better:
The left third of the picture is all black - like it would have been wiped out !!!

I played with the timings but the situtation didn't change:
- the polarity has no influence
- the error occurs with each of the following modes my monitor is "pre-adjusted" for
according to the user's guide
   resolution h-freq (kHz) v-freq (Hz) polarity kgicon.mon
  1024*768 56.48 70 -/- 75000000 / ... 1328 0 /
...
806 0
  1024*768 60.02 75 +/+ 79700000 / ... 1328 1 /
...
801 1
  1024*768 60.24 75 -/- 80000000 / ... 1328 0 /
...
803 0
( ... stands for the "correct" settings
frome above)

With other settings the on-screen-menu sais "unsupported mode" and the picture can't be
adjusted to fill the whole screen.

Very strange problem for me ... any hints ?
