I remember a discussion about making the rasterizer flexible
with respect to the pixmap format it draws to. Is it possible
or do you have plans to support to draw to pixmaps with (more
or less) arbitrary pixel formats ? I'm interested into this
as we use freetype for the text rendering in berlin, and we'd
like to avoid any unnecessary crossblits.
There's currently a little discussion in the GGI project about
a font extension library. I proposed that the best thing to do
would be to provide a 'GGI backend' for freetype's rasterizer.
What do you think about that ?

Regards, Stefan

PS: the 'GGI backend' would simply be a rasterizer drawing into
a 'GGI visual', i.e. a pixmap with a specific pixel format.
Also, a framwork like GGI might be a good place to hook caching
strategies into, as it has knowledge of the underlaying h/w,
i.e. it could use special video memory for glyph caches.
