you can run XDM with no sessions to start, then manually start them later, using the 
"broadcast" option of X.  This will then hook it to a running XDM/KDM/GDM session and 
you can have users log in then.

otherwize, i just log in on the console, and run "startx {option} {option} {option} 
{option} {option} {bunchmore options}" ;)
