I tracked it down futher: actually in

display/xf86dga/XF86VMode.c:187

    _XRead32(dpy, &xmdline, sizeof(xXF86VidModeModeInfo));

the above call doesn't return but waits in select()
Unfortunately the keyboard and pointer were just grabbed...
