+1 for the first two phase of the original proposal. I always wished it was not a type alias.
No strong opinion of phase 3, I have propabaly never run into sophisticated enough issues to fully get the picture... but I doubt we'll be able to craft an ideal cross-platform API, I like what is in spirit in the original proposal.
