Gitlab is back up and running.
Sadly an issue with the gitlab instances server configuration caused
downtime today.
As there was no one immediately available to take action this persisted
for a few hours.
If you see any more issues after this mail let us now.
What caused this? An overzealous backup setting caused frequent backups
to fill up one of the disks completely.
Resulting in some services to fail with out-of-space errors.
I freed some disk space, and Bryan (thanks!) updated the config to be
more reasonable so we shouldn't run into
this issue again.
I want to end on the note that I and others involved in maintaining this
infrastructure acknowledge that our GitLab instance
has been too unreliable in the recent past. The current level of
(in)stability of the service is not acceptable. And we are
actively looking for ways to improve things.
After all I'm writing this after one too many late evenings of being
notified that there are issues requiring immediate attention.
