Hi, also FWIW: the Xilinx WebPack also runs on Linux. Two flavors are supported, but it also runs on Debian and Ubuntu. The basic tool chain programs can easily put in a Makefile based flow. On the board side I'd like to mention the Digilent Nexys2 Board with in the 1200K gate version. Has a 16 MByte PSDRAM, slow but quite easy to interface. Nice board for not too demanding designs. With $129 also affordable.
