Well, before you touch the inner mechanics of your car,
I would suggest that you learn how to drive :-D
Why would you contribute in GHDL in particular ?
Do you have a specific motivation for using it ?
I would suggest that you learn VHDL very well.
It takes a long while, believe me :-/
I still discover things after using it for 10 years...
but it's worth it :-)
GHDL is written in ADA and uses the GNU toolchain.
so be ready to dive into a lot of arcane and intricate concepts.
Learn to make your own compiler before you hack someone else's !
Think about the improvements you would like to do, then look
if these improvements are not already planned.
Hint : they probably are... (i'm considering two already)
Finally, it is Tristan Gingold, the author of GHDL, who controls
the source code and any inclusion. You'll have to make a good case
before he accepts any external submission.
However you don't have to be a ADA guru to create useful extensions
to GHDL. I made some in C language and they are available at
http://ygdes.com/GHDL/
Have a look and see if you prefer to make useful extensions, or
if you'd rather hack directly into the source code
(which is not for the faint of heart)
Good luck !
