I confess I don't understand the gcc build system very well so I don't
know why I didn't see any issue that required them : is libgomp an
optional part of the build or something that will be essential for 4.8?

Useful to know! I'd be reluctant to #ifdef out the fix on -m32 (or in on
-m64!) there must be a better solution.

Did you get any more information than "segfault"? 
or would you be willing to re-enable tree-checking (add
--enable-checking to configure flags) to get better diagnostics on x86?
