Dear Brian,

I am looking for information regarding the GHDL Waveform (GHW) format
that you have devised for use in GHDL.

May I ask why?

please don't get me wrong. I don't mean to bypass the GPL'edness of either GTKwave or GHDL. Due to my experience, I think this might has crossed your mind. A couple of times before (the one was when asking for an up-to-date GCC GIMPLE grammar) I got this response.

Actually, it relates to a valiant effort. I can elaborate further if this is necessary.

I have a question: which waveform format in your opinion, is either sufficient or could be extended to support a representation for analog data (real arithmetic)? It can even be done via bitstrings of course, but then a specifier would be needed (to denote the use of analog data). There are also some other possible extensions that come in mind.

I agree that (E)VCD is not ideal for VHDL.

Best regards
Nikolaos Kavvadias

I'll explain : there has been some discussion of adding support for
another wave format : possibly FST : to ghdl as an alternative to ghw
(currently ghdl/gtkwave only) and vcd (more widely used but not ideal
for VHDL).

I'm wondering if it might be time to bring that forward, but don't
expect it to happen instantly...

- Brian
