This is possible, but it might not be very simple. Feel free to
propose
an API.
So far my conclusion is to do the read/write of deeply included
instances
with explicit VHDL code :
- it is portable. You just have to care about tool-specific generic
wrappers.
- you can then synthesise the design with the access port and keep the
same tools
with the same protocols to debug the target hardware
It might however be slower and miss certain transient behaviours.
What are the alternatives ?
