Since my last message, I contacted 3 new places, then jemarch put me in
touch with a friend of him that could be able to help but for some
reason never replied my inquiries, and finally told me he would try to
get some help from relatives.
The current situation is that all the places I contacted were either:
- Unavailable for the several proposed dates and unwilling to tell me
which alternative dates would work for them.
- Not having enough sleeping capacity.
- Had a policy not to allow bookings for 3 nights or less (min 4 nights).
So this is not a good situation, that's true. At this point I'm tempted
to think that either John Darrington was very lucky to stumble upon the
Tagungshaus last year, or I did a really bad job of finding a suitable
accommodation in my area. Any of them could be true, but I'm not
interested in discovering which one, really.
So, unless jemarch's friends suddenly come to us with a readily
available place (which I honestly don't think will happen) the only
thing I can offer is a conference room at one of my employer's buildings
and celebrate GHM as has been done in other years - i.e. letting
attendees arrange a sleeping place for themselves.

Indeed, this seems to have been the last message.

I don???t know if at this point there is enough time left to successfully
organize the GHM in 2018, unless someone has already negotiated with
hostels / conference spaces in the area.
We had offers to organize the GHM in Crete(?), southern Italy, and San
Sebastian, but I don???t know what came of these early plans. I also seem
to remember a fall-back plan to organize the next meeting in
Switzerland.
Is anyone currently in the process of planning for the GHM?
(I probably won???t be able to attend this time, unfortunately.)
The planning seems to have stalled, because nobody came forward with a viable
venue to host it. I recall that the venue in Switzerland was deemed not
suitable because of it's small sleeping capacity and because it was
self-catering
only.
If somebody comes forward with either
A) A suitable alternative venue; OR
B) An offer to organise the catering
then we can try to arrange a GHM accordingly.
However, like you say, it is very late in the day now.
Debian Miniconf has a pretty neat description of a venue in Hamburg/Germany:
https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEvents/de/2018/MiniDebConfHamburg
Around the location are many good places to eat/drink, small hostels and
airbnb addresses (just in case, the venue offers all that).
Sorry to say that I'm too busy to care for details, but maybe someone
can talk with the venue and see if they still have capacity in the
summer/autumn.
