Eight authoritative blogs, 10 devout bloggers, three rigorous writers, and a
photographer extraordinaire constitute Rogue’s Portfolio this month. These
bloggers may come from different backgrounds and espouse divergent culinary
destinations, but there is no longer any discounting their collective influence
as a growing number of foodies rely on their online opinions on where—and
what—to eat

The Satirist
spankyenriquez.blogspot.com
Spanky Enriquez, Blogger and C.O.O. (Universal Worker Nurse Review and English
Proficiency Centers)
With article titles ranging from “50% OFF and 200% FULL at the Best and Biggest
Buffet in Manila!!!” (about the famous Spiral Buffet at Sofitel Philippine
Plaza) to “Bastusang Pambansa . . . ” (a scathing piece about the controversial
Constitutional Assembly), “Manila Boy” is not so much a food blog as it is a
website by a razor-sharp political satirist and self-confessed bookworm who
just happens to be a foodie, too.
“My Capampangan genes predetermined my becoming a foodie,” says Spanky
Enriquez, who cites Anton Diaz of “Our Awesome Planet” fame as one of his main
influences. “My grandfather served as mayor of San Fernando and vice governor
of Pampanga, and his wife, my Lola Sally, was renowned as a chef and had guests
ranging from Douglas MacArthur to Ninoy Aquino. And to this day, my aunts run
the legendary Hizon’s Bakeshop in Ermita, home of the best ensaimada in the
Philippines.”
Spanky’s easy but insightful writing style shines through in his posts. In his
popular post, “HOOTERS Manila: The HAPPIEST Place on Earth!!!”, he valiantly
defends the honor of the Hooters Girls—“And just because they don’t all look
like Marian Rivera, they get insulted in ways that would make Simon Cowell
cringe?” while singing the praises of their Hot Wings (“just the right amount
of heat, extremely tasty & crispy skin, and moist, tender meat”).
Interestingly, Manila Boy’s biggest foodie scoop was taken offline. When
Anthony Bourdain was shooting an episode of No Reservations in Pampanga in
October 2008, Spanky blogged, a little past midnight, about the famous chef’s
newfound infatuation with San Miguel Beer, complete with pictures. Hours later,
at around 6:30 A.M., the show’s producers gave him an ultimatum: either pull
down the blog post, or they would pull the entire Pampanga segment from the
Philippine episode.
“For the love of my home province, I removed my post about Bourdain
immediately,” he recalls.
