 The Late Night Fiasco

*WORDS BY: MIKEY AGULTO*

 ------------------------------

In another case of irony slapping you in the face, *the comedic world of
late night talk shows is currently in the middle of a huge
fiasco*<http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/television/news/e3i58f0e7e6076e50438367652c731f7066?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+thr%2Ftelevision+%28The+Hollywood+Reporter+-+Television%29>,
which is not a laughing matter at all.

*Funnymen Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien*, two of the funniest acts and hosts of
their respective late night shows, *are on the verge of being gone from your
TV screens* after a *combined stint of almost 36 years on television*, due
to schedule disputes with their network NBC.

Due to poor ratings at primetime, NBC is reportedly pulling the plug on *The
Jay Leno Show* by moving it to the 11:30pm timeslot. This would mean Conan’s
*Tonight Show* will have to be moved at a later time of 12:05am.

Something that Conan isn't too hot about. The red-haired talk show host
announced that he will step out of the *Tonight Show* if it moves to a later
time, citing the move ridiculous simply *because Tonight has been on the
same timeslot for over 40 years.

*Seriously, not funny.

Conan’s *Tonight Show* will reportedly air its *last episode January
22,*and Jay Leno himself has somewhat confirmed his return as the
show’s host
soon.

It's a sad turn of events, as these shows, though they may be a bit too
American for a lot of Pinoys, are some of the funniest, most intelligent,
and in the case of Conan, a great resource for finding new music finds.

So as a tribute to this whole brouhaha, we *take a look at some of the best
local late night talk shows* that have kept up company all those sleepless,
dateless nights.

*Oh No, It’s Johnny!
*One of the longest-running talk shows in Philippine TV, *Oh No, It’s
Johnny!* *came closer to having that Johnny Carson* feeling more than any
talk show ever did, thanks to *classy themes, socialite treatments, and his
quasi-side kick, the original socialite Maurice Arcache. *

The show featured dance numbers—a staple in local television, no matter the
time slot—and stand-up monologues by Mr. Johnny Litton himself.

He might not be as popular with the younger crowd these days, but up until a
decade ago *Oh No, It’s Johnny!* was the bomb. To date, Johnny Litton is
currently a travel and events writer for a broadsheet publication.

*Martin After Dark*
Not many people may remember this, but once upon a time, Martin Nievera was
king of local late night TV. His talk shows, ***M.A.D.: Martin After
Dark*and then later,
*Martin Late @ Nite* have the combination of a talk show and a variety show.

Although not the comedian type, Martin more than made up for it with his
funny interviews, stand-up-ish stunts, and highly regarded song numbers. He
did talk more than his guests, but he's rather entertaining that
everything’s forgiven.

After a respectable 10-year stint, Martin Nievera followed it up with *Martin
Late @ Nite*, which ran from 1998 to 2002. Here’s to hoping we see Martin go
back to his late night gig again!

*JoJo A All the Way*
We will always be grateful for the ever-trying late-night show concept of
Mr. Jojo Alejar. After all, it's not easy having your own local comedy show
on late night, which explains why nobody has attempted to even follow Jojo's
footsteps.

Considered as the Conan O’Brien of the Philippines, because he unbashedly
followed Conan's format down to the last detail—Jojo A. and his show managed
to survive one way or another by finding a home on different networks every
couple of years.

What makes him funny is his deadpan self-deprecating way of making fun of
how corny his stints are or how uh, *underground *and *obscure *his guests
sometimes are.

We here at *FHM *have been rooting for this guy for the longest time, with
hopes of his show finally making it big time. Please catch J*ojo A: All the
Way *on *TV5* every night, because whether we watch it or not, we love the
show very much.

*Walang Tulugan with The Master Showman*
Talk shows come and go, but *Master Showman* is forever. It sure looks that
way, we’re telling you.

Despite the show being labeled as "jologs" by many, we can't seem to find a
bad word to describe the show's success.

On air since 1997, the show has garnered massive support from the “masa”
thanks to its famous catchphrase ”Walang…Tulugan!” Classic.

Mr. German Moreno headlines this weekend talk show, along with long-time
companions John Nite and Jackie Lou Blanco. The show’s also been known to be
the training ground for young upstarts in the world of showbiz.

*Walang Tulugan with The Master Showman* airs on *GMA-7* every Saturday
midnight.

*Games Uplate Live*
While it's not cookie-cutter late night talk show, it may as well be given
its original host, *FHM babe Jaymee
Joaquin*<http://www.fhm.com.ph/fhm-babes/online-girlfriends/826>'s
verbal prowness.

*Games Uplate* has somewhat garnered viewership for its FM radio-type of
broadcast. It is also widely interactive for everyone, with really nice
prizes awaiting anyone who could answer the show’s less-than-moving
questions.

It's hit a certain level of popularity, thanks to Jaymee's unique hosting
style, and the almost-popular-but-never-hit-the-mainstream catch word *
kabagang*.

The show was previously hosted by the very hot Jaymee Joaquin before being
replaced by the equally funny Jessica “DJ Laila” Asis in 2008.

While the show is currently on hold due to the latest season of *Pinoy Big
Brother Uplate*, expect it to return to late night TV once the current PBB
season is over.
