 BEST VENUES FOR AUTOMOTIVE LEARNING
A true-blue petrolhead will not just want to drive a car. After all, there's
more to touch and feel and scrutinize in a vehicle than just the steering
wheel.

If you're a real car nut, you'd probably want to tinker with every little
piece of mechanism in your ride. But since you wouldn't want to mess up your
car in the process, you have to know what you're doing, right? Here are two
venues for car enthusiasts to learn more than just a thing or two when it
comes to automotive mechanics.

1. *Bosch Philippine Automotive Technical Training Center* --This facility
is owned and run by Robert Bosch, Inc., the local unit of global automotive
technology leader Robert Bosch GmbH. It is accredited with the Technical
Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) has so far produced 5,500
graduates. "Here they will receive training first-hand from our instructors
and be able to use our diagnostic machines and test bench," said Kaycee
Crisostomo, Bosch corporate communications manager. For more information on
Bosch's training program, call Eric Velasquez at (+632) 899-9095 or (+63918)
910-4195, or email [email protected]. The PATTC is located at
the Bosch Service Center in 9725-9727 Kamagong Street, San Antonio Village,
Makati City.

2. *Automotive Service Institute*--Also a TESDA-accredited facility but will
offer courses based on Australian standards. ASI has teamed up with the
Australian Trade and Technical College to deliver certificate programs for
those who want to upgrade their skills in automotive mechanics. ASI programs
will start in July but inquiries may be directed to school administrator
Gloria de Guzman via email ([email protected]) or telephone (+632) 856-1883. ASI
is located at the Mancor Corporate Center, 32nd Street, Bonifacio Global
City in Taguig.

Is the Chevrolet Camaro ever coming to the Philippines? It's time to erase
your doubt. The Covenant Car Company, Inc. (Chevrolet Philippines), the new
distributor of the American car brand in the local market, has confirmed it
will soon be selling the popular muscle car. "It's definitely a go," said
Atty. Albert Arcilla, Chevrolet Philippines managing director and chief
operating officer.

Mazda 2 sedan, hatchback launched in the Philippines [image: Honda

Mazda Philippines has officially launched the hatchback and sedan variants
of the Mazda 2 in the local market. The five-door hatchback variant of the
Mazda 2 has been on sale in authorized Mazda dealers since December 2009.
While the sedan variant only became officially available today, customers
have already expressed interest in acquiring the four-door Mazda 2. "We just
recently put the Mazda2 sedan on display and some customers have already
placed their order for it," Mazda brand manager Prudz Castillo said.
"Although the hatchback was launched first, we believe more people will buy
the sedan because they see it as the more practical choice because of its
trunk."

*I feel the earth move*

I don't know if it's sheer paranoia or an unhealthy lack of sleep, but I
often catch myself these days sensing that the ground is shifting underneath
my feet. But it could also be just hunger, as I sometimes starve my way to
thinness (which never works, by the way, because my body has accumulated a
lifetime's worth of stored fat). Anyway, recent seismic disasters in
Sumatra, Haiti and Chile bring back memories of the magnitude-7.8 earthquake
that hit Baguio on July 16, 1990. Twenty years after and I still vividly
remember where exactly I was at the time: I was walking to the jeepney stop
when the tremor struck Metro Manila. The ground shook so hard that I got
dizzy and was forced to sit by the curb.

*The return of the Love *

The waiting game is a killer and, when you are used to moving at a rapid
pace, delays at the shop can test your patience. It was during one of those
moments of frustration that I remembered advice given to me by fellow
enthusiasts: "You must be patient." And I was. However, when progress is
unusually slow you begin to wonder if you brought your car to the right
shop. I began to worry when I walked into the talyer to find the entire
wagon covered in surface rust. The painter assured me that I shouldn't
worry. He then brushed muriatic acid on the rust and it quickly disappeared.
This was cool, of course, but wouldn't it have been more practical to coat
the scraped sections in etch primer, instead of giving the car an acid bath
every other day (for three weeks)?

At the press of a button, the Hyundai Tucson will scale up or down a
gradient between five to 20kph. Sweet! Then there's adaptive damping. Again
Hyundia shows that despite the price increase they still offer loads of
value for what you pay for.

*Poll question of the week*

Are you and your car prepared for an earthquake?

   - Yes, I observe most of the things on the Chief's list.
   - Not yet, but I will be... soon.
   - No, I'm not afraid of anything so there's no need to prepare.
