after cairo got upgraded to 1.12.10-1 on my (archlinux) system, i found that zooming images to any size larger than their original/automatic display size broke them up into unconnected, rectangular tiles. this happened with the stable version (2.8.2) as well as 2.9 (GIT master).

for a while i couldn't figure out what went wrong, until one user on the archlinux users list suggested downgrading cairo; 1.12.10-1 -> 1.12.8-2 solved the problem.
