Of course it sounds interesting to find somebody who likes to contribute and - from your side - to find an interesting open source project to support with your abilities. I agree with most of what Jehan already said. Let me add that GIMP is not written in C++, but C. To estimate the impact of your changes, it's surely better to know clearly (rather than believe) what the data structures you've planned to optimize are for and where and why they are used.
