I found most of my > toolbox keys by just pressing random ones and seeing what happens. Here's a suggestion: read the GUM, Gimp User Manual, at manual.gimp.org. It will give you a list of ALL default keybindings. And all tools can be selected through the Image menu (you know: right-clicking in an image). They are, as you said, "easily customizable by pressing the desired key combo while an item is selected". Now, keep a little quieter, and let the gimp team finish releasing 1.2.
