>From a quick glimpse at the code in gauss_rle it seems to do the right 
thing, which is basically:

if (gimp_drawable_is_rgb (drawable->id) ||
    gimp_drawable_is_gray (drawable->id))
  { 
     /*  blur  */
  }
else
  {
    gimp_message ( "gauss_rle: cannot operate on indexed color images"); 
    /*  exit wit error  */    
  }


The problem seems to be elsewhere.
