Hi Leonard, thank you for reporting this. Depending on exactly where the program crashes, losing your tool options can surely be a side effect of a crash. If you have a set of default options you use quite often, you can keep them. Open Edit/Preferences/Tool Options and press the 'Save tool options now' button.
Without having more information about the file and your configuration it is hard to give you a detailed answer. It would be good, if you could report this on Bugzilla and attach the file there (preferably the XCF file, if you have one). We could try to reproduce it then. Is this probably the same as bug #683983 [1]? If yes, please add your findings there. Otherwise file a new bug report, please.
