I'm amused by the idea of no plugin - been using ufraw in 2.8 for
some years.  But 2.8 is, of course, only 8-bit.  For larger bit
depths in 2.9 I have recently tried PhFGimp (gimp plugin for
PhotoFlow).  And this list has in the last few months had mention
of nufraw (a fork of ufraw, when mentioned on the list a fix to
compile it against recent 2.9 was mentioned - I haven't tried it
yet).

But for windows users, probably it will be easiest to use Partha's
builds of the gimp (2.9) (I don't have a link) which I think include
both nufraw for the plugin and g'mic for its extra filters.
