Did you name the pasted layer? If not, the layer will appear as Floating Selection (Pasted Layer).
Double click on the pasted layer’s name and give it any other name. Move the newly named layer to its new position - ~50% layer opacity can help with this. Under the Image menu, click on Fit Canvas to Layers. That should give you the canvas size you need and you should be able to see all of your pasted layer. Don’t forget to change layer opacity back to 100%, or whatever your project calls for. Hope this helps.
