The work was done in GEGL and babl really :) @Klaus GIMP's processing engine is capable of loading a CMYK TIFF file, processing it with a filter or placing an RGB image over it, then saving it all back to CMYK TIFF. We need volunteers to plug this all into GIMP. This would require changing both core functions and file plugins (TIFF, JPEG, PSD).
