If the mouse works ok with everything but GIMP, the GIMP mouse driver is
probably the issue. Try booting up with another distro on thumb drive or DVD,
and see if the problem goes away.

box and I often can't even click on the "X" at the side of the image to

It seems as if the mouse just is not working in the software.
