Introduction of any new technology should be justified in the context
of existing technologies. In this case one technology is email.
Another is Usenet news.  Individual Usenet servers can exclude spam.

I don't think changing to a service many people wouldn't even have heard
of is very viable. Even email is not really in use by many people beyond
receiving email notifications and password reset mails for accounts they
have at various services.

Discourse is usable via its web interface and email (you can get
notifications and reply by mail, there's even a way to send some
commands) - so it seems to cater to a larger group overall.
