[Gimp-user] remove background

I have some pictures here: http://www.fys.ku.dk/~arvid/ and I would like to remove the background so I can copy/paste the persons into another picture.
But how do I do that when the background contains a lot of coulors - like here: http://www.fys.ku.dk/~arvid/M4110102.JPG
