Depends on whether you have the file saved in XCF format, how many layers, etc. Let's assume it is a GIF. In crude terms: 1. Select background 2. Add alpha channel 3. Hit DELETE 4. Re-save Depending on complexity of the image it will be Step #1 that could take a little time.
