circular text

I might be stupid, but is there any way to have precise control on the
size of the output and the mapping ratios in the plug-in that maps an
image into a circle (polar coords)?

[Note: if I can't find myself how to do such simple stuff as render some
text then make it circular properly, then "normal" users will never find
out how to do this.]
