Newbie: How to do vertical text

Ok, I'm very new to gimp AND I'm sure there is a simple way to do vertical
text like:

H
E
L
P


For whatever reason, I can't seem to find anywhere in the tutorials how to
do this. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
