gimp on solaris 7 box

I'm attempting to fix a problem I'm having running
gimp on an Ultra 5 running solaris 7.

I initially was trying to run the gimp which
came with the helix-gnome distribution.  When
I got the error message below, I recompiled
gimp 1.0.4, but continue to receive the same
message at runtime.  The windows start to 
display, then gimp dies with the following error:


Gdk-ERROR **: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
  serial 3404 error_code 8 request_code 74 minor_code 0
Gdk-ERROR **: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
  serial 3664 error_code 8 request_code 67 minor_code 0




Any suggestions?
