Aren't "software" and "editor" mutually exclusive in this case? Anyway, I don't see what's wrong with "The Free & Open Source Image Editor". It uses the word "free", and the "open source" bit serves nicely as an explanation what kind of free it is. If purists have a problem with that, I dare say they might go ahead and create a free gnu whatever image editor of their own. Godspeed with that.
