Combination of peritonitis and puerperal fever (I assume this would be quite dangerous even now). BTW she acquired her housekeeping skills as the eldest of her mother's 14 children (to which her stepfather added another 4 from a previous marriage). So it's hardly surprising she married and left home at the earliest possible opportunity !
