Apparently there was a merge issue caused by a change in the C API early on, but that doesn't seem to be my problem. I think that perhaps the libs installed by the Git bash shell are conflicting with some of those in Cygwin. I've had some clone's work but unfortunately it's not yet entirely reliable.
