It is a directory rather than a file and it is invisible, an example:

    Welcome to Git (version 1.7.11-preview20120710)

    Run 'git help git' to display the help index.
    Run 'git help <command>' to display help for specific commands.

    GadgetSteve@GADGET-LAPTOP ~
    $ cd /c/t
    Temp/      TrueCrypt/ tmp/

    GadgetSteve@GADGET-LAPTOP ~
    $ cd /c/Temp/

    GadgetSteve@GADGET-LAPTOP /c/Temp
    $ git init testme
    Initialized empty Git repository in c:/Temp/testme/.git/

    GadgetSteve@GADGET-LAPTOP /c/Temp
    $ ls testme/

    GadgetSteve@GADGET-LAPTOP /c/Temp
    $ ls -A testme/
    .git

    GadgetSteve@GADGET-LAPTOP /c/Temp
    $ ls -A testme/.git/
    HEAD config description hooks info objects refs
