Thanks for the info.

It's not that I can't push the commits, but that I don't want to push the 
commits upstream.  So many of the changes made to the clone require 
significant structural changes to databases, etc. that it is incompatible 
with older implementations.  There is no need to upgrade clients who are 
happily using the previous version, but I want to maintain the older 
version in a separate development track while starting a new development 
track for the new version.
