Not really sure what you're trying to do here, but if you want to find an 
easy way of versioning files in directories that inherently are not Git 
repositories, you may want to take a look at https://github.com/RichiH/vcsh - 
it's main use-case is for versioning files in the home-dir, but I believe 
it would work on files/directories in / as well.
